Talya S. Laufer, MD

Professor of Radiation Oncology, University of Maryland School of Medicine

Talya S. Laufer, MD is a general radiation oncologist with a particular interest in treating thoracic/ lung and gastrointestinal cancers. She is experienced in advanced radiation treatment modalities including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), MR-guided SBRT, brachytherapy, and radiopharmaceuticals. Dr. Laufer will split her time between Central Maryland Radiation Oncology (CMRO) and Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Laufer earned her Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University in New York, where she graduated cum laude. Following her undergraduate studies, she served in the Unit of Civil Service with the Israel Defense Forces. She then spent two years as a middle school faculty member at Yavneh Academy in Paramus, New Jersey, prior to starting medical school at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Philadelphia. During her medical studies Dr. Laufer spent two years as a research fellow in the Karen Knudsen Laboratory at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University. She then completed a one-year internal medicine internship at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, before returning to Thomas Jefferson University, where she graduated from the radiation oncology residency program.

Dr. Laufer’s academic work has resulted in several peer-reviewed publications, and she has presented at multiple national scientific meetings. She participated in the 2023 American Association for Cancer Research Molecular Biology in Clinical Oncology Workshop, and was the recipient of a 2024 Radiological Society of North America Resident Research Grant for her ongoing work and studies of the role of tumor microenvironment lipid metabolism in the radio resistance of pancreatic cancer.
